4. Epilogue (Chapter 4)

This is the last chapter. I will not spin acne conspiracy theories, many of which can be found on the Internet. The pharmaceutical industry is a big business. The drugs can be sold for huge money. Diet is for free. Big companies are not interested in finding natural cure for acne. Do not forget that a lot of researches is funded by pharmaceutical companies. I stumbled one day on the conclusions of the study (can't remind now who was behind them), which showed that in societies in remote corners of the world that do not eat processed foods (including bread anf high glycemic index products) the problem of acne practically doesn't exist. My acne started in adolescence period, when I used to be hungry all the time and used to eat lot of sandwiches and drink lot of milk. So maybe for some people it actually has a significant impact? People grow grains probably several thousand years ... Produce highly processed foods shorter. Previously, people ate what they hunted or found in the forest. Maybe human digestive system could not keep up with evolution of agriculture and food industry... and for some people it manifests as an acne? Remember also that probably neither adult animal in nature drinks milk... ecpecially from the cows that are often fed with hormones and antibiotics. Don't forget that the human body is complicated mechanism in which a disturbance of one function leads to the disturbance of other ...

Summary of my acne method:
Most important:
+ Gluten-free diet
+ Milk and dairy-free diet
+ Low glycemic index diet
But also:
+ Drink more mineral or spring water (no popular drinks with sugar, no alcohols)
+ Give up smoking
+ No face cosmetics, soaps and other chemical products (wash face only with cool water)
+ No drugs and other antibiotics

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm 32 now and my problem started also when I was 17 and has never stopped since. I get huge cysts on my face, especially my chin, mostly re-appearing at the same places. I've been living a nightmare and my hopes were always crushed after everything I tried all this years, now 16 years altogether. I'm quite petite and have a small face, sometimes my cysts look like the biggest feature on my face. Although I have nice features and beautiful hair, I've always felt ugly and dirty and my skiing is always red and pealing from all the anti-acne chemicals I've been applying that never really work anyway. My skin, apart from that is really nice and delicate in the places where I don't normally get acne, like my cheeks and nose, it's smooth and not rough at all, so it's a total contrast, I confuse people with my looks, I'm delicate yet I have huge red vulcanoes on my chin and forehead.
This gave me hope, you gave me hope, I'm gluten free from now on and I'll try to follow this diet. I pray that it helps!
    Thank you!!!

  3. Great story! Aside from that, i think using some natural products like honey can also help. Here's how:

1.)Make a mixture that consists of three teaspoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon.

2.)Apply the mixture on your face before going to bed and then wash your face with clean water the next morning. If you want to get rid of an annoying pimple just before going out you can use this simple but efficient remedy: mix half a mug of warm water with 1/4 teaspoon of salt, then with the help of a cotton ball apply the mixture directly on the problematic area; press the area with the help of the cotton ball for several minutes, in order to moisture it; with the help of another clean cotton ball, apply honey on the irritated area for about ten minutes and then remove it with gently by using a dry, clean towel.

    1. I know it's a chemical but if you open up a liquid alieve and dab a little on a cyst it goes down VERY quickly in size. It doesn't cure the problem internally but it helps

  4. I found this page while searching the internet to see if anybody else has found a link between gluten and acne. Not because I'm trying to make my skin better, but because my skin became clearer than it has ever been and the only change I've had recently is going (almost, not entirely) gluten free.

It really is amazing. Interesting that others have seen this too. Interesting that dermatologists don't know about it.

  8. Your story is very touching. I have tried everything for my acne, and nothing will help clear it. Right now I'm trying the baking soda mask and a prescription skin cream an its starting to clear up, but I'm. Trying not to get my hopes up because it usually re-flares. I think I am going to try your diet suggestions & see if it will help my acne. It couldn't possibly make it worse (knock on wood!).

  12. i have been doing low-carb high-protein diet(which means that i can eat meat, fish, vegetables and a few specific nuts) for the last 2 months. I had moderate acne on face and body and seborrheic dermatitis on face and scalp. After 2 months on gluten-free diet both acne and seb derm are drammatically reduced. Needless to say i'm thrilled. Now the hardest part is to maintain this type of diet.

I incorrectly believed my problems were caused from gluten. Less than 48 hours ago I stopped consuming milk and any dairy products. My skin looks better already. It's less greasy, black heads are disappearing, no new pimples!!!

  15. What a great story! My 9 yr old son is battling acne and I am so sad for him. He is prescribed Retin A but its just not working. How can a 9 yr old have bad acne at his age? Trying to explain it to him is heartbreaking. I have thought about taking milk out of his diet? I will try anything. I just don't no how much of the diet I can put on a 9 year old who loves cereal with milk and chocolate milk.

    1. My acne started when I was nine! Obviously not hormonal - you mention chocolate milk, one of the reasons simple carbohydrates are bad is because they break down into sugars easily and cause a sugar rush - try cereal without chocolate milk! Stop drinking fizzy drinks like coke, try brown bread instead of white and cereals like shreddies and weetabix instead of frosties and cocoa pops. Fewer saturated fats can help too, so fewer crisps, chocolate, take out meals etc; I don't know your life style, I'm just making a few suggestions based on what I know. Hope it helps!

    2. What about chocolate almond milk or coconut milk? Almond milk tastes better than regular milk anyways, at least in my opinion. But I try to avoid sugar for the most part, but that's just a suggestion, I hope it goes away for him :-)

  16. First I want to say "Thank You" to the man that posted this blog on the internet.. you truly charged my life. I will be 20 in a month and have had very bad acne/cysts for a good 6 years now. Ive been on all meds (Accutane included)/face washes/creams. Everything! I started being gluten free about two months ago. It was the hardest thing I've ever done! My acne really started to go away just after 3 weeks though! I was amazed. The past two weeks I have been slacking a bit, eating bread, crackers. Never a lot ( so I think ill be fine) but I'm getting big cysts again. Reading this blog has really helped me stay on track. I am so thankful for it! I am definitely not giving up, I will not let this control my life!

I don't let this control my life either.

I had just stopped an almost complete protein only diet, and i was looking and feeling my best ever then. So cut a long story short - just figured it was gluten after cutting out those food. Its getting better, face feels like a baby's bum. So will start dermaroller soon to make it look better after gluten war on my face.

  21. I have suffered on and off from moderate to severe acne. It seems I've gone through many phases in life and the common factor is weight loss=less acne/no acne. I haven't made a super connection to the diet, i believed more that the skinnier i get the more my face improves. i am now convinced that i just cannot have gluten like the average person and that my body cannot handle the sugars/soda/sweets like others-a year ago i had a dramatic face improvement when i completely erased bread/pasta/cereals out of my diet. i also dramatically decreased cow dairy- started buying soy milk (which i might add is not that bad at all) i consumed more vegetables, exercised more and water became my best friend. well in the last 4 months i have had a severe flare up....the common denominator is me spending more time with the boyfriend has lead to ....more gluten and more dairy which he consumes on a regular basis no problem...i ran to the derm office and demanded help- cystic acne flare, scars, pain and embarrassment of friends n family noticing the horror on my face kills me. they perscribed retin-a, clindamycin and again im on bactrim. its been almost 2 months on the meds...and im not seeing a dramatic improvement - after doing research tonight, trying to fix my frustration i have determined through reading so many articles....i have to stick to this 'clear skin' diet. i am allergic (in my own way) to these inflammation causing foods. i need to take a stand say no when someone offers me candy/sweets/gluten filled foods. no explaining a crazed diet to coworkers, no guilt,no dairy, no processed junk, no giving up. this is my face, and i dont want to be burdened by this anymore, im doing this for me.
i know this is hard, ive fallen off the diet (for weight loss) band wagon before...but this weight loss plan has my skin at stake and i refuse to lose this time. im 25 yrs old, i have a boyfriend and id like to get married someday-have kids the whole works but i do not want the scars from acne to be there along the way....so begins day 1.

    1. Acne can be a symptom of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - I'm no doc so please don't trust my word on this. I just went to the doctors today actually, and I was asking about the cause of the acne, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can cause acne and the cure is to basically keep your weight in check (your first comment less weight = less spots is what made me think of this) and I think you are more prone to spots along your jaw line.
I know nothing, but who knows, it might be worth a check with an actual doctor! Hope it helps!

  22. Scientists discovered in 2003 that acne is an inflammatory process triggered by a deficit of linoleic fatty acids (omega 6) in the sebaceous glands due to a dilution effect when sebum production is high. The deficit is sensed by our innate immune cells. Then they alert the cells that line the walls of the sebum ducts inside the pores (keratinocytes). The later start reproducing more than before and in a way that makes them more compacted with each other. Sebum lacking omega 6’s becomes hardened and “punctures” the cells lining the walls of the ducts. Also the shear force of too much sebum outflow also “cuts or severs” some of those cells.

When the keratinocytes die in the normal process of cell renewal and regeneration they are sloughed off the walls of the ducts in large blocks that create the “horny plug” that blocks the flow of sebum to the surface. The pressure of sebum blocked “implodes” some of the cells lining the walls of the ducts. In blocked pores there is no oxygen and that not only kills more cells inside but also is the perfect environment for the acne bacteria that thrives without oxygen deep inside in the sebaceous glands, and then start colonizing all the duct, up the hair shaft. Their metabolic wastes “corrode” the cells lining the walls of the sebum ducts.

All those injuries need to be healed for acne to resolve. Killing bacteria is not enough.

Fortunately, medicine is shifting from poisoning the acne bacteria and moderating inflammation with antibiotics that may become useless when they are required for more urgent health issues to regenerative medicine where the discovery of the molecular events that are involved and affect the body’s immune system are at stake.

Regenerative medicine screens the natural world in search of soluble molecules, or attempt to replicate complex molecules in the laboratory that stimulate endogenous repair, and embark in gene therapy, stem cell transplantation, tissue engineering, and the reprogramming of cells and tissue types.
Regenerative medicine centered on human cells could become a disruptive technology because it would potentially replace a number of mayor macro molecular pharmaceuticals and medical prostheses.

In the meantime the good news is that the discovery of a naturally occurring skin care serum capable of supporting the immune system at the site of skin damage and stimulating endogenous repair is changing the outlook for those for which acne treatments have failed. Check it here http://www.biocutis.com/.

  23. Hi
Thank you for this very interesting information.
I had acne for nearly forty years, and have recently fixed mine. I try to stick to an anti-inflammatory diet, but I also take mega dose vitamin c as sodium ascorbate, and finally I identified I had a low body temperature and fixed that. I did also have a number of minor ailments which accumulated over the years as a consequence of low body temperature, once I fixed it they too have started to disappear.
You can read this story on normalbodytemperature.co.uk. I will back link you.

  24. As a 25-year-old, I have suffered from acne since puberty -- the all-over-the-place bumpy kind. I was losing hope that this was a "phase" that would ever end on its own. I've always had confidence issues and going without makeup requires extreme amounts of courage.

After trying everything, like everyone else, I gave up milk because of some research I'd found on the cow hormones and antibiotics in it, and later became vegan for ethical reasons.

But it was only when I went gluten-free a couple of weeks ago that I have seen radically clear skin for multiple days in a row! Giving up gluten is the most effective thing I've ever done for my skin and it is incredibly exciting!

    PLEASE TRY IT!

  31. Thank you for this blog. I tried this and eliminated gluten and dairy from my diet for six months and within a week of elimination, my acne started to drastically improve. Not only did my face clear, but my blackheads (that I've had for 20 years!) finally started to go away! I now only wash my face with water and I save so much money not buying all the products and medications to treat acne--which never worked for me. I'm almost 40 years old and my acne got worse as I got older...until I eliminated gluten and dairy. Thanks again for this post!!

  35. A few comments.Using diet and home remedies can be useful, and sometimes "cure" acne. But in many cases You need to use professional help. This involve glycolic acid peeling (superficial) to open channels for sebum, use modern treatments (in my clinic I use electroporation as method of direct delivery) and soft photon therapy to eradicate bacterial growth (usually we start with a blue light to change it for purple and finaly red).in the same time patient has to use special soap and tea tree oitment.

  36. Hello my name is Daryl, I have had Acne since I was around the age of 15. It become worse around the age of 17. I tried many over the counter and prescribed medicines. The over the counter stuff worked for a limited amount of time and the prescribed medicine I took was accutanne. The accutane did work to cure my acne but I felt extremely unhealthy and also depressed. I was on it for about 10 years ranging from 40MG per day to 10MG per day. Recently I read that the Paleo diet helps to cure acne, so I tried it out and it worked fantastic. I also was praying to god for a solution and he really did show me one or at least helped me somehow read a blog on the Paleo diet. I've been following it as best as I can and within 2 months all of my acne has cleared up and I am no longer getting new acne. I have only gotten 1 pimple since. I would highly recommend the Paleo diet or something similar to what was mentioned on the Home page of this website. Foods that are high in starch can cause your sebum glands to produce in excess which causes Acne. Please spread the word I hope that more people find this! Thank you Daryl

  37. Hello all I have suffered from Acne for over 15 years of my life. I've tried non prescribed methods and also Accutane. Accutane did work to clear up my skin but once I stopped taking it the acne would come back. Also it made me feel very unhealthy and depressed. I read a blog on the Paleo diet and facts that it helped to cure acne. So I tried it and within 2 months my acne was cleared! Starchy Carbs can make your Sebum glands produce in excess which cause acne and I believe this is why I was breaking out. The paleo diet is very similar to the one described on the home page of this website. Please share this with more people as I wish for more people to be cleared! I also have to thank god because I did ask him for a solution and he connected me to read the article which started me on this diet in the first place. Good luck all.

  47. Battling acne can be tough and finding products that suit your skin is a challenge. There are tons of products that are bad for your overall health in the long run. Applying chemicals to your skin is literally adding those into your blood stream. Even if you find a product that seems to have your skin under control it eventually stops working! Your skin becomes immune to it.

I have suffered from acne since I was 12 years-old. I have used EVERYTHING there is to use, from Accutane, birth control pills, BP, creams, you name it. NOTHING seems to get rid of the problem, it always came back (sadly).

Over the years and a lot of trial and error I have come to find the best natural products that work great for my skin and have worked for many of my friends. Here is a list of products I use to keep my skin clear!
    1. Face wash. This is by far THE BEST face wash there is. The huge bottle lasts you for months. I use it to wash my hair sometimes too. I alternate, some days I use the peppermint and some days the Tea Tree one. 1. Dr. Brooner's Peppermint All Natural Soap
    2. Dr. Brooner's Tea Tree All Natural Soap

    2. I then tone my face. This step you DO NOT want to miss. It makes a whole lot of difference. TRUST ME! The one I know will work for you as it does for me is the Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel toner. Read the reviews yourself. It is amazing.
    3. Then I moisturize my face with a Vitamin C serum. The best one I've tried is this one: 1. Best Vitamin C Serum

    4. The last thing I do is AVOID ALL DAIRY!
